Bersatu Youth backs no contest for top 5 party posts

Bersatu Youth has voiced its full support for an accord not to contest the top five party posts in the party election in October.

Its chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said this would ensure harmony and unity within the party to face political challenges.

“It is the best formula for the stability of the party and further strengthening the position of Perikatan Nasional that is finding its place and support in the hearts of multiracial and multi-religious Malaysians.

“Bersatu’s main focus is to be a champion of the people at a time this deaf ‘lembu kenyang’ government fails to hear the plight of the people. Thus, all of the party members’ attention and efforts should be focused on this,” he said in a statement today.

Lembu kenyang (literally “satiated cow”) is a Malay expression referring to a person who is stubborn, lazy, or indifferent.

Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin had told a party convention on Saturday that those who wish to contest in the upcoming party election to negotiate among themselves first to find ways to avoid clashes and prevent disunity.

He also revealed that the party’s top brass have agreed on a line-up that would see secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin move up to the deputy president post, while incumbent Ahmad Faizal Azumu takes a step back be one of the party’s three vice-presidents.

Bersatu supreme council member Azmin Ali will be offered the secretary-general position.

However, Bersatu vice-president Ronald Kiandee said the line-up is merely a suggestion, and no motion has been submitted to keep any party position uncontested.

“We are still contesting (party posts) but we have a spirit of consultation and good negotiations agreed upon by the delegates. It is still an open contest, but it has been negotiated and discussed well together,” he added, according to a Bernama report.
