‘Don’t be swayed by promises’

8.15pm: BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi urges Felda Perasu settlers to be cautious and not be swayed by promises in the ongoing Nenggiri by-election campaign, and to think carefully before casting their votes on Aug 17.

“If outsiders attempt to undermine Felda, I urge the settlers here to reject them, as the real victims will be the Felda Perasu settlers,” Bernama reports him as saying during his speech at the “Peneroka dan Felda Berpisah Tiada” event at Dewan Semai Perasu today.

Felda Perasu, with 1,724 registered voters, is the only Felda land scheme under the Nenggiri state constituency.

The deputy prime minister stresses that the federal government has consistently ensured the welfare of Felda settlers and reaffirmed that the land scheme remains a top priority.

Zahid notes he has received numerous applications related to issues raised by Felda settlers nationwide and assures that he would address them to the best of his ability.

BN going door-to-door instead of big ceramah

3pm: BN is focusing on door-to-door campaigning instead of grand-scale ceramah in the Nenggiri state by-election.

Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan says, besides that, party leaders and BN candidate Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani are also conducting smaller talks.

“I myself and some party leaders have participated in group ceramah and we don’t want to make it difficult for people to come to these ceramah. This is because many of the people who came (to ceramah) were outsiders,” he tells reporters when visiting the construction site of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Taman Agropolitan, Rantau Manis today.

Ahmad adds that key BN leaders such as chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and election director for the Nenggiri by-election Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah will participate in the campaign soon.

Zahid: BN willing to probe govt machinery use claim in Nenggiri

1.40pm: BN is willing to investigate claims that government machinery was used in the Nenggiri by-election campaigning, as long as such allegations are backed with proof.

According to BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, critics should complain about the matter through the proper channels, under the Elections Act.

"We will investigate the claims, and if they (critics) have the evidence, they can lodge complaints via the right channels.

"Don't simply accuse (BN) of using the government machinery. I believe the Kelantan (state) government does it too," the Umno president tells reporters after attending a meet the rakyat session in Renok Baru, Gua Musang, today.

Yesterday, Kelantan Menteri Besar Nassuruddin Daud slammed BN for allegedly using government-owned premises for its election operation in Nenggiri.

Earlier, electoral reform group Bersih also condemned BN on the same matter.

9am: Kelantan Menteri Besar Nassuruddin Daud slams BN for allegedly using government-owned premises for its election operation in Nenggiri.

According to him, the Kelantan PAS government does not even allow government vehicles to be used for campaigning purposes.

"Government machinery cannot be used for by-elections; I use my personal vehicle.

"I have ordered all exco members not to use government vehicles to campaign as the one competing (in the by-election) is two parties against each other, not a party against the government," Nassuruddin says during campaigning in Pasir Tumboh, Gua Musang.

Yesterday, electoral reform group Bersih condemned BN's alleged usage of a government building for election purposes.

Nenggiri voters returning to BN fold - T'ganu Umno

8.30am: Terengganu Umno claims that Nenggiri voters will return to support BN on Aug 17 polling day.

Its assistant secretary Bazlan Abd Rahman says he witnessed the change in the constituents' attitude while campaigning in Renok and Perasu, after the Aug 3 nomination day.

"Both the areas were former Umno strongholds but lost (to the opposition) in the last state elections. God willing, we will seize them back in the upcoming polls," Bazlan tells Utusan Malaysia.

He claims this is because folks in the areas are becoming confident with the Madani leadership paying attention to their plight.

Umno’s youth and women wings have been mainly assigned to approach voters in the two areas, he adds.
