Asyraf: Umno will keep fighting for Najib’s justice, full pardon

UMNO AGM | Umno will not stop efforts to demand justice and free its convicted former president Najib Abdul Razak from prison, said party secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

Speaking at the 2024 Umno General Assembly today, Asyraf revealed that the highest number of motions submitted to the party leadership was to call for Najib’s full pardon.

“The headquarters received motions from 171 divisions and out of that, 72 divisions requested that we continue demanding justice and a full pardon for ‘Bossku’ Najib.

“As long as ‘Bossku’ is trapped behind bars, Umno’s voice and efforts (to free Najib) will never cease.

“Give your full trust and confidence to the top leadership. Let us continue to pray as prayers are our weapon.

“May Allah soften hearts and open the way, and may Najib be released in accordance with Article 42 of the Federal Constitution,” he said.

Earlier, the party’s general assembly began with the hoisting of Umno’s official flag - the Sang Saka Bangsa.

The ceremony was witnessed by party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, deputy president Mohamad Hasan, Asyraf, and other party leaders.

Najib was jailed for 12 years and fined RM210 million after the Federal Court upheld his sentence and conviction in the SRC International case in August 2022.

He is also on trial for other matters related to the 1MDB scandal.

In February, the Pardons Board cut Najib’s 12-year jail sentence to six and reduced the original RM210 million fine to RM50 million - a whopping 76 percent.

The former prime minister subsequently filed an appeal on July 9 to serve the remainder of his six-year jail sentence as house arrest, alleging that there was a royal addendum order for him to do so alongside his jail time and fine reduction.

The Court of Appeal had set Oct 7 for case management.
