After 20 years in jail, Al-Maunah follower regrets manipulation by 'friend'
Serving a 20-year sentence behind bars has taught a former Al-Maunah prisoner, Mohd Ramli Mahmood a painful lesson for being manipulated at the innocent invitation of a friend to learn spiritual teachings.
Ramli, more fondly known as Abe Li, is now 70 years old and said he was too trusting when the “friend” said the teachings only centred on healing and martial arts, and he didn’t think twice about joining the outlawed militant Islamic deviant sect in 2000.

Ramli, more fondly known as Abe Li, is now 70 years old and said he was too trusting when the “friend” said the teachings only centred on healing and martial arts, and he didn’t think twice about joining the outlawed militant Islamic deviant sect in 2000.
“I got involved with Al-Maunah when I was 47 years old with 29 other members because, in the beginning, I thought that this movement was about learning traditional healing and silat (Malay martial arts).
“However, I did not realise that it was a sinister movement which was to threaten the country by waging war (high treason) against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong," he said at the “Semarak Merdeka 67 programme” in Kota Bahru yesterday.
The father of eight also advised the younger generation not to be easily influenced by friends who manipulate them to join radical movements that threaten the nation’s peace.
“The trials and tribulations of a life condemned to spending 20 years in Kajang and Machang prisons taught me a great deal, not to be easily deceived by anyone including my friends.
“I hope that young people are not easily influenced by the trend of teachings or new movements that can destroy the harmony of the country,” he advised.
Ramli, who received a life sentence, expressed his gratitude when he was pardoned by former Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, and was freed in 2020.
Commenting on the Semarak Merdeka programme, Kelantan National Security Council director Jefny Muhammad said as many as 67 motorcycles including high-powered motorcycles, kapcai (low cc motorbikes) and scooters joined the convoy around Kota Bahru to enliven the atmosphere of the National Month.
“Convoy participants also stopped at SK Seribong and SMK Padang Enggang to celebrate with the students by distributing the Jalur Gemilang and singing patriotic songs,” he said.
