Zahid welcomes probe after Bersatu Youth police report

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he welcomes the investigation resulting from a Bersatu Youth police report for his allegedly deceiving and misleading the previous Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The BN chairperson repeated his claim that the 10 statutory declarations (SDs) from BN MPs who gave their support to Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin were invalid.

“I hope that the authorities, whether the police or the Registrar of Societies or even the attorney-general himself, can investigate the matter,” he told a press conference after an event in WTCKL today.

All BN candidates must sign three documents acknowledging that any seats won belonged to the party and not the individual, as well as handing over power to form the government to the coalition chairperson, he explained.

There is video recording evidence of BN candidates signing the documents, he added.

On Friday (Aug 30), Bersatu Youth permanent chairperson Akmal Zahin Zainal Zahir lodged a police report against Zahid, saying that the latter's deception of the previous king is a serious criminal offence.

“Zahid admitted that he had sent a letter to Istana Negara after BN MPs withdrew support for Muhyiddin Yassin and remained neutral,” he said.

Questions surrounding support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to form a government after the 15th general election were again raised after Muhyiddin’s speech on the Nenggiri by-election campaign trail.

On Aug 21, Muhyiddin submitted to police 115 SDs, including his own, backing him as prime minister in the aftermath of the 15th general election in November 2022, which resulted in a hung Parliament.

The media were later given a copy of Muhyiddin’s SD to the palace dated Nov 21, 2022, in which he mentioned that he had attached to his document 51 SDs from PN, PAS (22), Gabungan Parti Sarawak (22), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (six), Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Malaysia (one), as well as SDs from 10 BN MPs and two independent MPs.

The SDs and letters were among the documents Muhyiddin furnished to the police as part of their probe into allegations that he had insulted the former king by bringing up how he had not been invited to form a government after GE15 despite having the support of 115 MPs - including himself.

However, the next day (Aug 22), Zahid refuted the claim, saying Muhyiddin only had 105 statutory declarations, which was not enough to form the government.

“What he (Muhyiddin) said included 10 SDs from MPs who also signed two SDs with BN and so with that, his real total is 105 SDs.

“And 105 is not enough to form the government,” the Umno president told a press conference.
