Seputeh DAP Youth files report against Akmal, asks why only Teresa probed

Seputeh DAP Youth chief Joel Jalleh has questioned the authorities on why DAP MP Teresa Kok was the only one being investigated over her remarks on the halal certification issue.

“The video released by (Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad) Akmal Saleh has created misunderstandings among Malaysians concerning 3R (race, religion and royalty) matters, yet police have not summoned him.

“Why the double standards? Others who have raised and amplified this issue were not called in either,” he said at a press conference outside of the Sri Petaling police station today.

Joel (above, second from right), who was flanked by three other DAP members, said this after lodging a police report against Akmal for allegedly calling Kok an “old Nyonya”.

Kok came under police investigation following her remarks over the proposal to mandate halal certification for restaurants and food companies that do not serve pork and alcohol, as it would burden businesses and could subject Malaysia to global ridicule.

Akmal retaliated by calling her an “old Nyonya” who should not have interfered in Islamic affairs and said he would ask the government to prepare a “non-halal logo” to stick on her forehead.

After giving a statement to the police on Sept 10, Kok issued a letter of demand to Akmal yesterday seeking RM25 million in damages, to which the Umno leader replied: “Ok, Nyonya. We meet in court. No fear, no surrender.”

Taking Akmal to task, Joel said his criticism against Kok on his video was baseless and misleading, particularly in relation to the 3R issues, and called for a fair investigation.

“We urge the police to investigate and act on Akmal for causing confusion and division among the public.”
