Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs) Mohd Na’im Mokhtar will address concerns regarding the Federal Territories Mufti Bill, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

However, Anwar did not provide further details when asked by the media, simply responding: “Let the religious minister answer (about) the mufti bill.”

The bill has faced criticism from several quarters, including lawyer Latheefa Koya, who warned that it could have serious implications for Muslims in the country.

Perlis ruler Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail had described the bill as having a “narrow interpretation” of Sunni Islam and lacking inclusivity.

Women's rights group Sisters in Islam echoed concerns, warning that the bill could grant unchecked powers to religious authorities, particularly through provisions granting them legal immunity.

Some 14 groups based in Sabah and Sarawak claimed the bill violates the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), calling it a direct attack on the country’s secular framework.

However, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil dismissed the claims yesterday and explained that the bill is similar to the Sabah Fatwa Enactment, which has been in place for 20 years without affecting the cultures or lifestyles of Sabahans.

Similarly, Na’im urged all parties not to create doubts among the Muslim and non-Muslim communities in regard to the matter as doing so would hinder the government's efforts to strengthen the administration of Islam in the country.

"We should respect the fatwas issued by the mufti, as the mufti is the authoritative body responsible for providing advice on syariah law, as stipulated under Section 33 of the Administration of Islamic Law (Federal Territories) Act 1993 (Act 505) (Clause 4 of the mufti bill)," Bernama reported him as saying yesterday.

On Oct 11, it was reported that the bill would be tabled for second and third reading when Parliament convenes tomorrow.

The first reading of the bill was conducted in July.
