PN MP referred to Parliament committee for 'racist speech'

PARLIAMENT | Chong Zhemin (Harapan-Kampar) submitted a motion to refer Wan Razali Wan Nor (PN-Kuantan) to the Parliamentary Rights and Freedoms Committee for allegedly issuing racist statements and misleading the Dewan Rakyat.

Chong said the submission was made to the Dewan Rakyat speaker’s office following Wan Razali’s statement on the recent incident in Teluk Intan where China’s national flag was flown during a procession.

“The Kuantan MP’s speech both explicitly and implicitly tried to question the loyalty of Chinese and Indian Malaysians when he accused them of gathering together and carrying flags in this country we love.

“The Kuantan MP’s racist speech has raised feelings of hurt or enmity between races in Malaysia while also confusing the House because the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) already confirmed that no Malaysian waved the Chinese flag at the Teluk Intan incident,” he said.

According to excerpts from the Dewan Rakyat Hansard dated Oct 29, Wan Razali (above) was quoted as saying: “We remind those who received citizenship that none of them should forget that they must give their full loyalty to this country.

“We don’t want that, after giving them citizenship, they publicly gather together, without following our country’s legal channels, carrying their respective flags (from their motherland) in this country we love.”

On Oct 2, a group of individuals waved China’s flags at a Guan Gong event in Teluk Intan, which went on to cause public outcry.

The event organisers later apologised, explaining that citizens of China, not Malaysia, had waved the flags.

A police investigation found that the organisers violated the terms of their permit by allowing foreigners to participate in the parade.
