Selangor interested to reclaim KL if opportunity arises: Report

The Selangor government is interested in having Kuala Lumpur restored as a district in the state if the opportunity arises, according to a report.

Nevertheless, New Straits Times reported Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari saying his administration respects the terms of the agreement signed in the 1970s that transferred Kuala Lumpur from the state to the federal government.

He said the agreement is bound by two conditions: the presence of the federal administrative centre and the location of the Parliament building in Kuala Lumpur.

“It’s not possible yet (to reclaim Kuala Lumpur). We’ll wait for any leader who plans to move Parliament, and then we can request Kuala Lumpur to be returned as a district under Selangor,” he reportedly told the state legislative assembly during today’s proceedings.

This was in response to a question from the Bukit Gasing assemblyperson Rajiv Rishyakaran regarding the Greater Klang Valley project.

Kuala Lumpur was ceded to the federal government on Feb 1, 1974, with the signing of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Agreement on that day.

Selangor’s administrative centre was moved from Kuala Lumpur to Shah Alam, which officially became the state’s capital in December 1978.

Meanwhile, Amirudin reportedly told a press conference later that the demarcation of the border between Kuala Lumpur and Selangor will be finalised within two years.

Survey work is being carried out by the Survey and Mapping Department, which will be followed by an agreement to finalise the border.

“Discussions are ongoing with Federal Territories Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa to coordinate administrative matters.

“We are considering a radius of five to 10km from our borders in Ampang, Gombak, Cheras, Kajang, and Petaling.

“Perhaps we can align development plans because there is a need,” he was quoted as saying.
