Floods: Bersatu Women's wing supports call to postpone SPM

The Education Ministry should be considerate of the mental state of SPM candidates experiencing floods, said Bersatu Women’s chief Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.

Addressing a press conference after the Bersatu annual general meeting today, she expressed the wing’s support for a suggestion by Tumpat MP Mumtaz Md Nawi for the exam to be postponed.

“It is not only about logistics issues like where students can be sent (to sit for exams) and such. But instead, the students’ psychological factor is far more important. How are they going to face this exam?

“And I really understand (their predicament). As a mother, surely I would want the best for my children. So when I raise this issue, I am putting myself in the shoes of the mothers whose children are flood victims.

“I totally get it when Tumpat MP suggested (for SPM to be postponed), and I believe there is no issue for Perikatan Nasional to submit a memorandum to the education minister.

“The ministry should be more considerate, especially at such a critical time,” said Mas Ermieyati.

The Masjid Tanah MP was responding to a question about the government’s decision to go ahead with the SPM examination, which will begin tomorrow, despite many candidates being affected by major floods in several states.

PAS lawmaker Mumtaz recently suggested that the SPM be postponed as many candidates and schools were hit by the disaster.

The recent floods across several states have worsened, with the number of evacuees rising from 146,611 last night to 152,377 this morning.
