Govt MPs trade barbs, PN rep calls for speaker's intervention

PARLIAMENT | A debate session on the Supply Bill 2025 this evening turned into a verbal brawl between two government MPs from DAP and MCA.

Chong Zhemin (Harapan-Kampar) accused Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam) of insulting the Dewan Rakyat in a Facebook post last month.

He alleged Wee (above, right) of saying that the august house did not allow any debate on the issue of SJKC (Chinese vernacular school), an accusation that Wee immediately denied.

As a response, the MCA president cited Standing Order 36(1) against Chong (above, left) for misleading the Dewan Rakyat.

"What I said was, that I asked about the SJKC issue in the Dewan Rakyat eight times and every time, I only received the response through written replies.

"So, I questioned, how come eight times I could not get a (verbal) answer like the way we are communicating now?

"(But) I believe the minister will reply to me today. So, there is no issue. I also did not raise this matter anymore.

"But he (Chong) accused me of saying that the issue cannot be debated here. I suggest he goes back to school and learn Bahasa Malaysia again," Wee said.

‘Embarrassing’

The former transport minister's remarks ticked off Chong, who retorted that it was Wee who could not understand Malay well.

Both continued trading barbs over the issue before a Perikatan Nasional MP stood up to chastise them.

Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (PN-Kuala Krai) said it was embarrassing for two government representatives to quarrel, and urged Suhaizan Kaiat, who was presiding over the committee stage debate session, to put a stop to it.

"This is humiliating, they are both from the government side and fighting in the dewan," he said.

However, another PN representative called for the speaker to give Chong and Wee more time.

"I suggest we give both some extra time so they can continue quarrelling," said Wan Saiful Wan Jan (PN-Tasek Gelugor).

To this, RSN Rayer (Harapan-Jelutong) chided Wan Saiful, telling the opposition not to add fuel to the fire.
