'Chinese speaking Chinese' remarks: Ball in AGC's court, minister says

Police have completed investigations into PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man’s remarks on the Chinese community.

This is over Tuan Ibrahim’s remarks that “Chinese speaking Chinese” would cause others who don’t understand the language to make negative assumptions.

Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that police had probed the matter under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

“Investigation papers have been forwarded to the Attorney-General Chambers for further action,” he said in a parliamentary written reply to Lim Lip Eng (Harapan–Kepong) yesterday.

On Sept 11, Tuan Ibrahim, in expressing his belief that distrust is a major cause of divisions between races, opined, “When Chinese speak Chinese, Malays don’t understand so there will be buruk sangka (bad assumptions).”

“(The same goes when) Indians speak Indian,” Tuan Ibrahim said at a press conference in Temerloh, Pahang after officiating the PAS Youth muktamar.

The Kubang Kerian MP said such suspicions could be allayed if all spoke Bahasa Malaysia instead.

His remarks prompted Lim to lodge a police report on Sept 13, calling the PAS leader’s statement racist and could potentially divide the country’s multiracial society.
