PAS Youth deputy chief Mohd Hafez Sabri today urged the Education Ministry to investigate why 10,000 students were absent for the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) Bahasa Malaysia paper.

He said the ministry should implement aggressive measures to ensure that these students are not left behind as failing the BM paper leads to an automatic failure of the SPM examination.

“This figure (of 10,000) is not only a shocking figure but also gives the impression that there is a major problem currently plaguing the national education system,” he said in a statement on Facebook.

SPM is the most important public exam and is often used as a benchmark for the national education system, he added.

On Jan 2, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said around 10,000 students have yet to confirm their attendance for the SPM.

Last year, over 10,000 students were absent from the SPM.

On Dec 19, Fadhlina praised the decision not to postpone the SPM oral tests due to flood issues, saying it has resulted in a high attendance rate of 97.49 percent.

Before the SPM began, Bersatu Women’s chief Mas Ermieyati Samsudin supported a suggestion to postpone the SPM for candidates experiencing floods.

Last Saturday (Jan 4), Amanah Youth deputy chief Danial Al-Rashid Haron expressed his concern for the 10,000 students who missed their BM paper.

He said the government cannot allow thousands of students to be left behind which may have been due to factors outside of their control.
