MACC ready to probe DBKL board member over RM4m project

No MACC probe has been opened so far on a Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) advisory board member over misconduct allegations, however, the anti-graft agency is prepared to do so pending the results of an internal City Hall investigation.

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said this is regarding the award of a project involving RM4 million.

"We are ready to investigate if the findings of DBKL's internal investigation show that there are elements of corruption and abuse of power," he told Sinar Harian today.

Yesterday, New Straits Times reported that Kuala Lumpur mayor Maimunah Mohd Sharif had confirmed the internal investigation following viral claims of a board member's misconduct on social media.

The issue revolves around the award of an RM4 million project, which allegedly did not go through an open tender and bypassed governance processes.

According to the claims on social media, the board member purportedly holds a position in the same company that is supposed to carry out the project.

"We are taking these allegations seriously and have instructed the integrity unit to investigate the claims of improper procurement," Maimunah was quoted as saying by NST.

The integrity unit is obtaining evidence to determine whether the governance processes were followed, she added.

Minister warns of stern action

It was also reported that Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa had instructed Maimunah and the Federal Territories Foundation executive committee chairperson to expedite the investigation.

"If there are any breaches of governance, stern action will be taken,” Zaliha was quoted as saying by NST, stressing that there will be no compromise for misconduct under her watch, especially within the Federal Territories.

Maimunah also confirmed that she had halted another project involving RM7 million as it was linked to the same board member who assumed the DBKL position last year.
