Jakim can only advise, cabinet rules interfaith guidelines not policy

In an apparent U-turn over the proposed guidelines for Muslims attending non-Muslim events, Putrajaya said any policy decision must be made in the interest of national unity and get cabinet approval first.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Na’im Mokhtar and National Unity Minister Aaron Ago Dagang also acknowledged in a joint statement that the matter has raised confusion among Malaysians.

“As such, the cabinet had agreed that the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) could advise Muslims on the importance of preserving their faith on such matters.

“However, the advice cannot be construed as a policy. We must be reminded that any policies made must consider national unity and get cabinet permission first.

“At the same time, the National Unity Ministry will enhance the implementation of harmony dialogue to strengthen harmony and interaction among multi-religious Malaysia,” they said.

Earlier, Sin Chew Daily quoted a source as saying the cabinet had decided to scrap the proposed guidelines.

In a written reply to the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday, Na’im (above, right) said the government is planning to introduce the new guidelines.

Among others, organisers are to seek permission from religious authorities if the event includes Muslims, and the events must not contain elements that could offend Muslim sensitivities.

Following backlash, Na’im said the guidelines were still under review.

The minister’s remarks courted backlash from many quarters including government allies such as MIC, MCA, and Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP).

On that note, the ministers said the Religious Harmony Committee will further discuss all matters pertaining to harmony among multi-religious Malaysia – which is jointly chaired by the duo.

They added that there is one meeting scheduled for this month, with 24 members comprising Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, Sikhism, Taoism, and Baha’is involved.

“An inclusive discussion, taking into consideration everyone’s sensitivities, is important for national unity.

“Malaysia is a country rich in diversity and shines as an example of unity and harmony to the world.

“And the Madani government understands that national stability relies upon the people living in harmony.”
