'Displaced like Palestinians': PAS Youth to rally against Urban Renewal Act

PAS Youth is planning a mass rally to protest Putrajaya’s plan to introduce the Urban Renewal Act.

In a statement, PAS Youth deputy chief Hafez Sabri called the proposed law “modern colonialism” and would see the poor chased out of their land like Palestinians.

He claimed the bill implicitly denies the voice of the minority, affects the socio-economic stability, and oppresses the rights of certain groups.

“It is also seen as oppression against the urbanites, especially the Malays from poor backgrounds. This new law favours property developers under a supposed urban renewal objective.

“The minorities will be pressed down. They will be asked to move out and hand over their real estate unwillingly.

“We are very concerned that the strategy that was once used to chase out Palestinians from their homes would be used again. The original landowners would lose their rights. This is a form of modern colonialism and it must be stopped,” he stressed.

‘Malay-Muslims must unite’

Thus, PAS Youth urged all Malaysians, especially the Malay-Muslim community, to unite against the bill.

Hafez said the mass rally will be organised with NGOs and other stakeholders to oppose the government’s plan to table the bill in Parliament.

It was reported that the government plans to table the bill in either June or July.

Under the proposal, the federal government seeks to lower the threshold for owners’ approval of urban renewal projects.

The Strata Titles Act requires a management corporation to obtain a “unanimous resolution” from the owners of a building or land parcel before it can execute such works.
