Urimai deputy chairperson David Marshel has urged the government to take action against individuals who have labelled Hindu temples as “kuil haram” (illegal temple) on Google Maps.

“This is not only offensive but also a direct insult to the Hindu community in Malaysia. Many of these temples have existed for over 50 years, primarily in estates and suburban areas where Indian labourers have lived and contributed to the nation’s development.

“Labelling them as ‘illegal’ is an act of disrespect and discrimination,” he said in a statement.

David emphasised that Malaysia has long been known for its multicultural harmony, where people of different races and religions coexist peacefully.

However, incidents like this threaten national unity and fuel unnecessary hatred.

“We must not allow such divisive actions to take root in our society.

“I urge the minister to take immediate action by working with Google to remove these offensive terms from their platform.

“Google Maps should not be a tool for spreading hate or disrespecting any religious community. It is unacceptable for such derogatory labels to be approved and displayed,” he added.

Thorough probe

David called on the government to thoroughly investigate to identify those responsible for this act.

He stressed that this issue is not just about temples but about respecting the rights and dignity of every Malaysian, regardless of their faith.

“Our country’s strength lies in our unity. Let us work together to stop such acts of discrimination and restore the mutual respect we once had,” he said.

Yesterday, lawyers representing the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple in Kuala Lumpur sought to set the record straight on the “misguided polemics” surrounding the issue, including claims that the 130-year-old house of worship is “illegal.”

The debate over the temple’s relocation - situated on privately owned land for the construction of a mosque - has fuelled the spread of hate speech on social media.
