Rejuvenating BN does not only have to do with the age of its lawmakers, said the coalition’s deputy chairperson Mohamad Hasan.
He said it also involves leaders who possess an inclusive vision, an ability to adapt to current political dynamics, and have broad knowledge.
He was commenting on the coalition fielding Yusri Bakir, 54, for the Ayer Kuning state by-election, saying it was the right decision.
“Not all candidates need to be young. Rejuvenating the party is not only in terms of age but in various aspects, including work movement and giving opportunities to academics.
“Yusri is not only a highly qualified academic expert but also possesses extensive knowledge in politics.
“We fielded youth candidates in the Nenggiri and Mahkota by-elections because they were our best options. Still, it doesn’t mean that the candidate for Ayer Kuning must also come from among the youth,” Mohamad said.

He spoke to reporters after the Seremban Land and District Office Aidilfitri celebration today. Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun was also present.
Mohamad, who is also the Umno deputy president, stressed that the coalition’s leadership carefully selected candidates.
“Yusri was selected to continue the work of the late Ishsam Shahruddin. I am confident that he has strong credibility with his excellent academic background.
“The most important thing is that, as the secretary of Tapah Umno division, he is well-liked… So, we hope that Ayer Kuning voters will be satisfied with the candidate we have named and give him the mandate to serve as their representative,” he added.
The by-election was called following the death of the BN incumbent Ishsam Shahruddin, on Feb 22, due to a heart attack.
The Election Commission has set April 12 as nomination day, while polling will take place on April 26. Early voting is scheduled for April 22.
