PSM again fields Bawani in Ayer Kuning

PSM has again opted to field its deputy secretary-general Bawani KS as a candidate in the Ayer Kuning by-election.

Bawani previously lost the five-cornered battle for the Perak state seat during the 15th general election.

Her candidacy for the upcoming by-election was announced by PSM chairperson Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj in an event today.

At the event, Bawani took an anti-racism oath, vowing to not capitalise on issues involving race politics during her election campaign as a method to garner support.

She also promised that the party’s activities would focus on social class struggles instead of race.

The Ayer Kuning by-election was called following the death of the seat’s incumbent lawmaker, 59-year-old Ishsam Shahruddin, who was also the Tapah Umno division chief, on Feb 22 last year.

During the previous general election, Bawani secured 586 votes and lost her deposit while Ishsam gained the seat with a 2,213 vote-majority.

Yesterday, BN named Tapah Umno secretary Yusri Bakir, 54, as its candidate for the state seat.

Perikatan Nasional is scheduled to reveal its candidate later tonight.

The Election Commission set April 12 for nomination day, with voters set to head to the polls on April 26.

Early voting will be done on April 22.
