  • Gunarajah George says Anwar's positive approval ratings reflect public confidence that the country is more stable.

  • He acknowledges that cost of living remains a challenge, but calls for more time and room to be given to Anwar and the government to carry out national transformation.

A Selangor PKR assemblyperson has lauded Merdeka Center's positive mid-term approval ratings for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Sentosa assemblyperson Gunarajah George said the 55 percent approval reflected public confidence that the country is more stable and principled.

"After two decades of pushing for change, the public is now witnessing the Madani government's commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, transparency in governance, and the nation's new vision," he said in a statement today.

According to Merdeka Center, the survey, carried out between May 12 and 23, among 1,208 registered voters, found that Anwar’s relatively stable leadership and perceived economic improvements have contributed to a more favourable outlook among Malaysians.

Cost of living concerns

The survey was done before the government unveiled plans to expand the sales and service tax (SST) and backlash against the prime minister over tone deaf remarks about how it would impact the price of imported fruits.

Gunarajah acknowledged that the cost of living is a major challenge.

However, he asserted that the people appreciate pro-rakyat moves such as increasing the minimum wage, festive financial aid to civil servants, and targeted fuel subsidies.

He also said that the economy is strengthening, with inflation at its lowest in three years.

"We urge all to continue giving time, room, strong support to the prime minister and the Madani government leadership to realise comprehensive national transformation," the PKR central leadership committee member added.
