Fuziah claims provocateurs fanning flames in PKR divisions

PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh claimed that certain quarters are attempting to sow discord within the party by inciting dissatisfaction among grassroots leaders.

She said the provocateurs are targeting party members holding their first division meeting for the 2025-2028 term, particularly those disgruntled after the recent party polls.

“I see there are efforts to instigate these branches into lodging complaints to stir up tensions,” she told Malaysiakini.

Fuziah (above) was responding to several divisions with the so-called “headless body” phenomenon, where a faction contesting the PKR polls won a division’s committee member posts, but lost the chief spot.

This phenomenon set the stage for the central leadership showdown between teams led by former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli and his eventual successor, Nurul Izzah Anwar.

It also spawned allegations of election irregularities - claims PKR has denied.

Pressed further, Fuziah did not name the individuals or groups she thought were behind the purported incitement.

PKR division chief allegedly breaches party rules

Yesterday, 19 committee members from PKR’s Kulim Bandar Baharu division submitted a complaint to the party headquarters, stating they no longer had confidence in their chief, Yeo Keng Chuan.

One of the signatories, Yusni Abdullah, said Yeo made decisions which contravened the party’s constitution.

He said the complainants, including the division’s deputy chief, vice-chief, youth chief, and women’s chief, also forwarded their grievances to Fuziah for further action.

“We urge the party leadership to nullify the decisions made during that meeting as they were not valid according to party rules,” he said when contacted.

Yusni added that the letter was also addressed to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and his deputy, Nurul Izzah Anwar.

He said they urged the party to investigate the appointment of certain individuals as advisers and management committee chairpersons without consulting division committee members.

“The division chief acts as though he holds veto power over all decisions, when Clause 39 of the party constitution clearly states that authority and responsibility lie with the branch committee, not an individual,” he said.

‘Some issues don’t align with facts’

When contacted, Fuziah confirmed receiving the complaint.

“I received the letter yesterday via WhatsApp.

“There are many matters raised in this report. I will review each one.

“However, on a preliminary reading, some of the issues raised do not align with the facts stated in the party constitution,” she said.

Kulim Bandar Baharu is the latest PKR division to report disputes between its chief and committee members.

Previously, 14 members of Selayang PKR Youth resigned, citing a loss of confidence in their leader, while Puchong PKR committee members claimed their first meeting was invalid.

Masjid Tanah PKR saw 15 newly elected leaders resign on May 15, less than a month after the party’s divisional polls concluded on April 20.
