PKR Youth VP receives Pasir Mas MP's RM1m 'animal caricatures' demand

Pasir Mas MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari has demanded RM1 million in damages from PKR Youth deputy chief Nabil Halimi for alleged defamation.

Confirming the matter, Nabil (above, right) asserted his right to free speech as a Malaysian citizen after receiving a letter of demand (LOD) from the PAS leader.

According to the LOD sighted by Malaysiakini, Fadhli demanded Nabil issue a public apology and pay RM1 million in damages, among others, over an allegedly defamatory post believed to have been uploaded on social media.

“I have received a letter of demand from Fadhli, as he mentioned yesterday.

“I’m reviewing the contents of the letter and will seek legal advice before instructing my lawyer on the next steps. Let’s dance,” Nabil said.

Fadhli drew attention on July 26 when he uploaded a caricature showing a goat and a sheep fighting over a banana while being observed by a monkey, portrayed as a judge.

The post was accompanied by a screenshot of a news report on the crisis between Thailand and Cambodia, with the caption: “Goats and sheep ideally shouldn’t need a monkey to mediate in a banana dispute.”

Outrage

The post sparked outrage, with critics accusing it of mocking Malaysia’s diplomatic efforts to mediate between the warring neighbours.

The conflict, which had resulted in casualties, was resolved following peace negotiations initiated by Malaysia in Putrajaya on July 28.

Several parties have since called on Fadhli to apologise for using animal symbolism in his commentary on the conflict and peace talks between Bangkok and Phnom Penh.

However, following the backlash and calls for an apology, the PAS information chief began monitoring online comments directed at him and initiated legal action after gathering evidence.
