Bersatu names Muhyiddin as its choice for 11th PM

Bersatu has unanimously endorsed its president, Muhyiddin Yassin, as the party’s candidate for the 11th prime minister.

The decision was made during the 8th Bersatu annual general meeting in Shah Alam today, where delegates from across the country convened in the two-day event to debate national issues and set the party’s direction.

Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali said in a statement that delegates had unanimously supported three key resolutions at the AGM: adopting the president’s policy speech, backing Muhyiddin’s leadership of Bersatu, and formally nominating him as the party’s prime ministerial candidate.

"Speakers at the assembly raised concerns over the rising cost of living, global and regional economic challenges, national unity and current political dynamics," Azmin said.

He added that delegates also pledged to strengthen the party’s election machinery and work harder at the grassroots level to win public support ahead of the next general election.

Last night, chaos broke out when Muhyiddin, in his policy speech, claimed there was a plot to collect signatures to oust him.

His remarks were met with shouts of “Not true!” and “Turun Tan Sri!” (Step down, Muhyiddin), countered with louder shouts of “Hidup Tan Sri!” (Live Muhyiddin).

Police probe

In his closing remark today, Muhyiddin expressed his disappointment over the commotion that erupted, lamenting that the incident prevented him from properly delivering his address, particularly on matters he wanted to convey to delegates.

He also stressed that the incident had tarnished the party’s reputation, and said that action would be taken against delegates who caused the disruption.

Police have launched an investigation into the kerfuffle at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC).

Shah Alam district police chief Iqbal Ibrahim said the incident is being investigated under Section 160 of the Penal Code for committing an affray as well as Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 on indecent behaviour.

He also noted that a police report on the incident was filed by Bersatu's chief of security at around midnight.
