Cops investigating Bersatu AGM chaos

Police have launched an investigation into a kerfuffle during Bersatu's 8th annual general meeting at the Ideal Convention Centre in Shah Alam yesterday.

Shah Alam district police chief Iqbal Ibrahim said the incident is being investigated under Section 160 of the Penal Code for committing an affray as well as Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 on indecent behaviour, the latter punishable with a fine not exceeding RM100.

Section 160, however, carries a heavier punishment with a jail term of up to six months or a fine not more than RM1,000.

Iqbal noted that a police report on the incident was filed by Bersatu's chief of security at around midnight today.

"The complainant, who was on duty during the Bersatu president’s speech, saw two Malay men - both Bersatu members - stand up and shout, disrupting the president’s address.

"The complainant then approached one of the men to calm him down, but was pulled from behind and fell, leading to a commotion inside the hall," Iqbal said in a statement today.

He added that the situation was successfully brought under control by several other Bersatu members, who escorted both men out of the hall, after which the assembly proceeded as usual.

"Neither the complainant nor any other individual sustained injuries, and no property damage was reported," he said.

Police urged anyone with further information regarding the incident to contact criminal senior investigating officer Afandi Ahmad at 016-7252948.

Shouting match

Last night, a commotion broke out when Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin sought to address an alleged attempt to collect signatures in a bid to unseat him.

It is understood that a delegate had shouted “Not true!” in response to Muhyiddin’s remarks during his policy speech, triggering cries of support and subsequent attempts to counter with louder shouts of “Hidup Tan Sri!” (Live Muhyiddin).

Earlier today, Bersatu Youth information chief Harris Idaham Rashid said his wing had lodged an internal disciplinary report and a police report regarding the incident.

The Balik Pulau Bersatu division chief also revealed that the party’s permanent chairperson, Langkawi MP Suhaimi Abdullah, has since met with “several individuals” said to be responsible for the commotion, and they had apologised.
