Kg Papan resident under remand over demolition protest

A resident of Kampung Papan in Pandamaran, Klang, who was detained during a demolition operation yesterday, has been remanded for a day to assist further investigations.

South Klang district police chief Ramli Kasa confirmed the arrest after the court approved the remand application.

“The suspect is under remand, which was granted for one day.

“We will forward the investigation papers to the deputy public prosecutor for further action,” he told Malaysiakini today.

Yesterday, a 57-year-old man was arrested for allegedly obstructing a public servant from performing his duties and making criminal threats.

It was reported that the man was upset with an officer on duty and smashed a glass bottle on the ground during the demolition operation.

The demolition work, which began yesterday and involved more than 20 houses, continued today.

Land dispute, eviction notice

Previously, residents of Kampung Papan had lodged 66 police reports against a local developer, accusing them of issuing unfair and invalid eviction notices.

The residents claimed that the eviction notice dated Aug 26 was issued despite their case still being heard at the Court of Appeal, which in March had allowed a stay of execution on the eviction.

However, it is understood that the Shah Alam High Court later granted the developer permission to repossess the disputed land and ordered the residents to vacate their homes by Sept 9.

In response, Kampung Papan residents held several protests, including one outside the Selangor state government administrative building and Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) headquarters.

Many of them, who claim to have lived in the village for generations, are demanding that TPPT Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of BNM, halt the evictions until their housing and land ownership issues are resolved fairly.
