Malacca police chief Dzulkhairi Mukhtar has reminded the public that a dress code applies at all complaint counters, except in emergencies.

His statement came after a woman was reportedly turned away from the Jasin district police headquarters while attempting to lodge a police report following a traffic accident.

According to Dzulkhairi, an inquiry was immediately conducted into the incident.

“We confirm the incident. The dress code follows the circular issued by the chief secretary to the government on improvements to public sector customer relations management, dated Dec 1, 2020,” he was quoted as saying by news reports.

He explained that two women went to the district police headquarters yesterday to lodge a report, and both were uninjured.

“The officer requested that they return home to change into more suitable clothing before lodging the report,” he said.

Dzulkhairi added that the woman returned at about 5.40pm the same day and was then allowed to file her report.

The woman claimed that she and her daughter were stopped at the police station’s entrance because her skirt’s hemline was slightly above her knee.

She said she requested an exception but was told she needed to buy long trousers before being allowed inside.

According to the woman, she had to purchase trousers from a nearby mall before she was finally permitted to lodge her police report.
