PKR threatens legal action over slander against party leadership

PKR has threatened legal action against anyone spreading slander against the party’s leadership following businessperson Victor Chin’s claims that an MP from the party had solicited RM10 million from him to resolve the “corporate mafia” scandal.

Its secretary-general Fuziah Salleh said it was easy to make such accusations, “particularly by those who are desperate to deflect attention from their own wrongdoings or misconduct”.

As such, Fuziah (above) said that any allegation levelled without substantive evidence should neither be treated as a fact nor used to tarnish the reputation of individuals or the party.

“In this regard, PKR will not hesitate to take firm action against any party that continues to spread slander or baseless allegations against the party’s leadership.

“Legal action will be considered and pursued accordingly, whether against individuals within or outside the party.

“PKR remains firmly committed to upholding the integrity of its leadership and to ensuring that any allegations raised are addressed through legitimate channels, grounded in facts rather than perception or vested agendas.

“All parties are therefore urged to exercise greater responsibility in the dissemination of information and to refrain from spreading allegations that risk misleading the public and undermining the political stability of the nation,” she said in a statement today.

RM10m to ‘resolve’ issue

Last month, Bloomberg named Chin as part of a network of businesspeople who allegedly colluded with the MACC to stage corporate takeovers.

Subsequently, the government ordered a probe into the matter. Last week, Chin complained about an anti-money laundering probe, alleging that authorities froze more than 500 bank accounts linked to him, causing widespread collateral damage to third parties.

On Tuesday, Chin dropped a bombshell by alleging that a PKR MP had solicited RM10 million from him to help resolve the issue. He also mentioned one named “Mr R”, whom Chin said acted as an intermediary and worked closely with the “corporate mafia”.

He also threatened to expose the MP’s identity if the money was not returned to him by March 30.

“I managed to arrange RM9.5 million initially, but the remaining RM500,000 was never passed to him, as this MP did not resolve the matter. None of the money was ever passed to the ‘corporate mafia’ gang,” Chin said.

Yesterday, Human Resources Minister R Ramanan denied claims that he solicited RM10 million from Chin.

Insisting that he has never met Chin, the PKR vice-president said he will lodge police reports against such accusations, which he asserted have been spread by “irresponsible parties”.

Govt, PKR must answer allegations

In a separate statement, Perikatan Nasional secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said Chin’s allegations were deeply troubling, not only because of the substantial sum involved, but also because they raised serious questions about corporate governance, abuse of political influence, and the integrity of the nation’s institutions.

He pointed out that this may give rise to the perception that political influence is being wielded to intervene in corporate matters and law enforcement.

“PN also calls upon the government, and in particular the PKR leadership, to provide an immediate explanation and to extend full cooperation to the investigations being carried out.

“Failure to address these allegations openly and with integrity will only erode public confidence in the government’s commitment to combating corruption and abuse of power,” Takiyuddin said.

He also urged the MACC and police to immediately conduct a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation “without concealment”, to ensure that the truth is established free from interference by any party or individual.

“PN further urges that the identities of those involved be determined solely through a proper investigative process, so as to avoid speculation that may unjustly damage the reputations of innocent parties,” the Kota Bharu MP added.
