DOE deputy DG claims trial over graft charge linked to home renovations

Environment Department (DOE) deputy director-general (Developments) Norhazni Mat Sari was charged at the Shah Alam Sessions Court this morning with corruption, linked to her home renovation works.

According to the charge sheet, Norhazni was accused, in her capacity as a civil servant, of receiving RM9,110 from one Tang Siong Hee, which was a payment for her house renovation works on May 25, 2022.

The payment was made via online transfer at Klang’s Public Bank Branch into Kah Yong Construction & Engineering Sdn Bhd’s account.

She was accused of receiving funds, without consideration, from Tang, the director of E-Concern (Borneo) Sdn Bhd.

E-Concern (Borneo) is a specialised environmental services company that focuses on managing, transporting, and disposing of scheduled waste.

Norhazni pleaded not guilty to the charge before judge Nasir Nordin, which was framed under Section 165 of the Penal Code. The legislation carries a maximum of two years imprisonment, a fine, or both.

Previous charge

Deputy public prosecutor Muaz Ahmad Khairuddin applied to tie her bail to her case in Kuala Lumpur, where she was charged last Friday for receiving RM21,000 from Tang for her daughter.

Muaz also requested that both cases be tried together, to which Norhazni’s lawyer, Haresh Mahadevan, did not object.

The court then allowed Muaz’s request for bail and fixed May 19 for case management.

Norhazni, along with DOE director-general Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar and an environmental control officer, was remanded for seven days starting Jan 30 to assist MACC’s investigation into a case involving e-waste management.

Their arrests followed MACC’s proposal for a six-month pause on all imports of plastic waste and e-waste to assess their impact on the country.
