Animal abuse

  • Lawyer Derek Fernandez has denied abusing a dog in his neighbourhood that reportedly left the mutt badly injured. This follows a viral post on Threads accusing him of such conduct.

Derek (above) told Malaysiakini that the dog, a Great Dane, broke through the metal bars of his gate shortly after midnight on May 4 and entered his house compound, where it attacked one of his dogs.

He claimed that he intervened and struck the dog with a stick before it released his pet, but the Great Dane reportedly remained aggressive and attempted to attack his other dog at the back of the house.

Derek claimed the dog’s owner later arrived at his house without a leash and struggled to control the animal before eventually dragging it out of the compound. He added that the dog was later treated at a nearby veterinary hospital and is reportedly in good condition.

Derek said he would be taking legal action for defamation against those who accused him of animal abuse based on what he described as “half-truths” circulating on social media.

Pig farm

  • PAS Youth has demanded that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil and DAP assemblyperson for Seri Kembangan, Wong Siew Ki, issue an open apology to the Selangor sultan and the state's people, over what it described as defiance of the ruler’s decree concerning pig farming in Selangor.

    Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden

The wing's chief, Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, warned that PAS Youth would lodge police reports nationwide if no apology was forthcoming within 24 hours.

In a statement, he said that Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had clearly reiterated that there should no longer be any discussion or debate over proposals to establish pig farms in the state.

However, he claimed that despite this, neither the Selangor administration nor the federal government has given due attention to the royal decree.

Afnan also questioned why the Madani administration appeared determined to defend such projects while allegedly neglecting the plight of padi farmers in Kedah.

  • Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has warned DAP leaders “who remain stubborn” not to test the patience of Malays and Muslims in matters involving the Selangor sultan’s decree on pig farming.

Akmal said the fact that Sultan Sharafuddin had to issue a second media statement on the issue showed that some parties still failed to understand the importance of decorum, the law and respect for the royal institution.

He stressed that the ruler’s decree was not a political proposal, but a clear stand taken in the interests of the state, the people, the environment and social harmony.

He also criticised leaders who continued to politicise the matter, saying it was no longer about winning debates but about understanding the customs and values of living in a constitutional monarchy.

MTUC

  • The Registrar of Societies (ROS) stressed that it issued the temporary dissolution order against the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) in full accordance with Section 14(5) of the Societies Act 1966.

It stated that the action was taken after MTUC allegedly failed to comply with ROS' April 6 directives, particularly concerning the submission of audited financial statements and balance sheets, including information relating to finances or assets received from foreign sources for the period between 2020 and 2025.

It said that MTUC has the right to submit an appeal to the Home Minister within 30 days from the date the order was issued.

Should no appeal be submitted within the stipulated period, or if the appeal is rejected, the order will take final effect in accordance with the provisions of the law.
