Pakatan Harapan is set to hold its convention on May 17 in Johor, against the backdrop of impending state elections in Malacca and Johor, as well as growing speculation over the 16th general election.

PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil, Amanah vice-president Adly Zahari, and DAP national vice-chairperson Syahredzan Johan issued a joint statement today announcing the matter.

The coalition last held its convention in 2022, after which it was postponed to make way for GE15. It was subsequently rescheduled for March 5, 2023, but had to be postponed again due to severe flooding that affected much of Johor.

"Held under the theme 'Tekad Madani, Harapan Rakyat', the convention serves as a platform to strengthen leadership and organisational unity, coordinate political strategies, and refine Harapan’s direction in addressing the country’s current challenges.

“As the leading component of the Madani government, Harapan continues to focus on strengthening the national economy, ensuring political stability, and building public confidence ahead of the state elections and GE16," the statement read.

The announcement on the convention today also comes amid intensifying political developments in Negeri Sembilan, following Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun’s call for the public to prepare for a possible snap state election.

This is despite efforts by Harapan’s top leadership to defuse tensions in the state, including a renewed show of support for the embattled Aminuddin, who faces resistance from Umno assemblypersons, following a royal tussle involving Negeri Sembilan nobles.

On Wednesday, Negeri Sembilan Umno stressed that it would continue supporting the state administration while simultaneously declaring a loss of confidence in Aminuddin.
