Politics

  • Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said that politicians who have “strayed” from their original path of struggle are among those who complain the most, compared with small traders in the country.

The prime minister said he was impressed by the spirit of small traders, who he observed tend to complain very little, in contrast to those running larger businesses or politicians.

He also drew a comparison with certain politicians whom he described as constantly whingeing and grumbling. He, however, did not explicitly name them

“Actually, traders at the lower level have very minimal complaints… it is the big ones who complain a lot, and the ones who complain the most are politicians who have strayed," Berita Harian reported him saying during his visit to the Taman Melawati Farmers’ Market today.

Religious affairs

  • Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung expressed grave concern over two clauses in the recently published Selangor State Planning Guidelines and Standards for Community Facilities.

Lee pointed to paragraph 6 under “KM: 4-3 Places of Worship Other than Islam (Risi)” in the guidelines, which states that placement of non-Muslim worship houses within areas designated as commercial zones is not permitted, while paragraph seven states that conversion of existing buildings into Risi use is not allowed.

In a Facebook statement, Lee said these guidelines can have far-reaching implications on the current practice of religious activities across Selangor, including Petaling Jaya.

"Rather than intensifying efforts to address the long-standing shortage of land for non-Islamic places of worship, why introduce restrictions on arrangements that have largely not posed problems?" he asked.

He also called on the Selangor government to put the guidelines on hold and to provide a clear explanation to the public regarding the intent, implementation, as well as implications, and review in entirety if necessary.
