Politics

• MCA president Wee Ka Siong said attempts to portray calls to reject DAP as racist were akin to accusing Sabah voters - including the Chinese - who voted the party out in last November’s state election, of also being racist.

  He also questioned what that would mean for DAP rejecting MCA, Umno, MIC, PAS, and Bersatu.

  Wee was responding to National Unity Advisory Council member Tajuddin Rasdi’s comment that caretaker Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi’s anti-DAP stance was racist and un-Islamic.

• Meanwhile, Onn denied that his anti-DAP stance is related to race.

  “This isn’t about arrogance. This isn’t about racism either. This is a matter of principles, mandate, and responsibility to the people of Johor,” he said in a social media post today.

  

  Onn said that Johor BN serves all races, adding that BN is working with Pakatan Harapan at the federal government due to a royal mandate.

Food security

• The country’s fish output is expected to decline slightly towards the end of the year as some companies have been impacted by the steep rise in diesel prices due to the conflict in West Asia.

  However, the decline is expected to have a minimal effect on the overall supply of fish in Malaysia, which ranges between 1.2 and 1.4 million metric tonnes, Bernama reported the Fisheries Department director-general Adnan Hussain as saying.

  

  He said this was because the fuel price hike has only affected vessels in Zone C2, which are not eligible to buy subsidised diesel, unlike boats that operate in zones A, B, and C.

  In March, catches from C2 vessels declined to 13,300 metric tonnes, compared to the 16,200 metric tonnes recorded during the same period last year. In April, the decline was from 21,000 metric tonnes recorded last year to 18,000 metric tonnes.

Corruption

• The MACC has recorded 1,095 charges and secured 563 convictions from 2,633 investigation papers opened since 2024, said Chief Commissioner Abd Halim Aman.

  Of the figures, Halim said 583 of the investigation papers involved high-profile and public interest cases.

  

  “Based on records from the Legal and Prosecution Division up to April this year, a total of 115 asset forfeiture applications were filed in court, compared with 179 applications for the whole of last year.

  “During the period, the MACC seized assets worth RM16.49 million, froze assets amounting to RM425,464.60, and secured forfeitures totalling RM3.42 million. Compounds amounting to RM10.47 million were also collected,” Bernama reported him as saying.
