Fuel subsidies

• Putrajaya’s decision to roll out MyKad-based distribution of subsidised diesel beginning next month was driven in part by rising smuggling activities in Sabah and Sarawak, Finance Minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan said.

  He told the Dewan Rakyat that the activities were prevalent due to the substantial difference between the prices of subsidised and non-subsidised diesel.

  Other factors behind the decision include the success of the Budi95 mechanism for subsidised petrol, which also used the MyKad method, and the increase in the country's spending due to the hike in global fuel prices, he said.

• On Budi95, Amir said the data collected between October last year and May shows the 200-litre individual monthly quota is adequate, as less than one percent of recipients recorded usage over the prescribed amount.

  

  “The data consistently shows that less than one percent of users in the Budi system - out of around 14 million users - consume more than 200 litres per month on a regular basis,” he said during Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat this morning.
