  • Khazanah Nasional Berhad has welcomed the Public Accounts Committee’s recommendations regarding Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), saying that it is aligned with broader objectives of taking MAHB private.

    “The PAC’s recommendations reinforce the broader objective that guided the privatisation of MAHB, which is to strengthen Malaysia’s aviation sector by improving connectivity, enhancing passenger experience, and reinforcing the competitiveness of our airports.

    “Many of these recommendations align with measures that MAHB and relevant stakeholders have already put in place or are now reinforcing to improve operational performance, stakeholder engagement, oversight, and service quality across Malaysia’s airport network,” Bernama quoted it as saying.

    The sovereign wealth fund is a significant shareholder in MAHB.

    Its managing director Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir said the objective of taking MAHB private was to create conditions for long-term transformation by enabling sustained investment, operational excellence, and continuous improvement across Malaysia’s airport network.

  • The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry is looking for mechanisms to help island communities in Peninsular Malaysia that rely on private boats for their daily commute to the mainland, specifically to address their needs under the Budi Madani scheme, Bernama reported.

    “The ministry can explore ways to extend specific assistance to this group,” its deputy minister Fuziah Salleh reportedly told the Dewan Rakyat’s special chambers.

    Separately, she said her ministry is refining the standard operating procedures to extend subsidised diesel fleet cards to old folks’ homes registered as NGOs.

    She noted that elderly care facilities are ineligible for subsidised diesel since they are not registered as companies, even though they have significant transport needs.

Wildlife conflict

  • A baby elephant was struck and killed by a car along Jalan Felda Nitar in Mersing, Johor, at 2.28am today, while its mother refused to leave its remains for seven hours.

    According to Bernama, the Fire and Rescue Department said a 31-year-old man was trapped and suffered leg injuries after the car he was driving crashed into the elephant calf and plunged into a 5m-deep ravine.

    Meanwhile, the Johor Wildlife and National Parks Department said the Elephant Capture Unit from the Johor Elephant Sanctuary assisted in driving the mother elephant back into the forest, while the calf’s carcass was later buried nearby.

    He said the department would conduct patrols tonight and tomorrow to ensure the safety of the mother elephant and prevent her from returning to the accident site.

    The Bernama report noted that the incident echoed a similar one on Mother’s Day last year, where a baby elephant was trapped under a container lorry after being hit, while an adult elephant believed to be its mother was seen trying to push the lorry in an apparent attempt to save her calf.
