Johor polls

  • The Muar District Office denied obstructing an event involving Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, saying it was relocated to another venue for administrative reasons.

Bernama quoted district officer Zainal Eran saying the district administration requested that the event be relocated to uphold the principle of neutrality in the use of government assets, stressing that government buildings should not be used for political programmes or activities.

He also cited the lack of an early formal application and limited programme details, with less than 24 hours’ notice making it difficult to coordinate logistics properly.

He added that the concerns proved justified when an inspection on the morning of the event found the area surrounding the new venue already lined with political party flags, even though the official campaign period for the Johor state election had yet to begin.

Transport

  • Flight operations at Labuan Airport have been disrupted by unexploded ordnance for the second time in a week, after the discovery of an old bomb at 3.45pm.

The discovery comes after several bombs were uncovered on June 26 during slope repair works in the same area.

Flight operations are expected to resume tonight after the police and RMAF dispose of the bomb and declare the area safe.

Animal welfare

  • The condition of the elephants Dara, Amoi, and Kelat that had been transferred to Tennoji Zoo in Osaka, Japan, is continuing to improve, with each recording weight gains while remaining healthy and active.

Taiping Municipal Council (MPT) president Akmal Dahalan said in a statement that the latest report from the zoo showed that Kelat had gained 260kg, Dara 35kg, and Amoi 30kg, compared to their previous weights.

Their diet comprised various types of hay as the main source of fibre, in addition to bamboo shoots, fresh grass, cabbage, and specially formulated elephant pellets.

“MPT would also like to clarify that the elephants at Tennoji Zoo are provided with a complete and balanced daily diet, prepared according to the species’ nutritional requirements by the animal care team and monitored by veterinary officers,” Bernama quoted him as saying.
