‘Malay struggle’ - dad, son pick different paths
Dr Mahathir Mohamad has joined the Ibrahim Ali-led Putra to “save the Malays”, whom he claims have lost political and economic control.
Whereas, his son Muhkriz, who heads Pejuang, is hoping to become part of Perikatan Nasional, which is led by one of his father’s many political nemeses, Muhyiddin Yassin.
“Although I’m already 97, my heart is still for the struggle of the Malays, who are now facing more problems than the other races. This is not about racism,” Mahathir said after receiving his membership card and appointment as Putra adviser.
On the other hand, Mukhriz said Pejuang’s participation as a PN component would ensure there is no split in Malay votes in the forthcoming elections for six states.
In the last general election, both father and son were decimated in their respective strongholds in Mahathir's home state of Kedah and lost their deposits.

1MDB: Ex-banker’s ‘immense regret’
A former banker with the defunct Singapore branch of BSI Bank has ”immense regret” over his involvement in layering funds linked to 1MDB.
Kevin Michael Swampillai revealed this during the RM2.28 billion 1MDB corruption trial of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
The ex-banker was responding to lead counsel Muhammad Shafee Abdullah’s cross-examination about Swampillai’s extensive oral evidence of how he and a few others at BSI dealt with fugitive businessperson Jho Low, invested billions of dollars of the funds of 1MDB and other related companies in an “obscure” method involving layering and hiding the identity of the client companies.
