'Rocket' hits turbulence

DAP experienced some turbulence over the weekend after its former MP Tony Pua launched some stinging remarks aimed at Umno.

Pua - who is not contesting in the state polls - had called on Pakatan Harapan supporters that the coalition can do better than the "corrupt" BN, and Umno.

The DAP leadership was quick to distance itself from the former Damansara MP's remarks, but feathers were still ruffled in Umno and BN.

Meanwhile, Harapan and BN's Selangor campaign got off to a rough start after top leaders missed a campaign launch on Saturday.

State BN leaders also skipped the event after feeling left out from organising the campaign launch.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said he missed the event as he was feeling unwell.

Zuraida loses RM10m case

PKR won its RM10 million bond lawsuit against Zuraida Kamaruddin over her defection from the party in 2020.

The civil court found that the bond Zuraida signed to contest the 14th general election was a valid and binding contract.

PKR said it plans to sue others who defected from the party in 2020 as well.

However, Azmin Ali - who led the exodus out of PKR - said Zuraida still had a chance to win the case on appeal.

MCMC sets sights on Meta

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has threatened to take legal action against Facebook's owners, Meta, over failures to remove "harmful content" from its platform.

The commission said it has repeatedly requested Meta to remove content relating to race, royalty, religion (3R), defamation, impersonation, online gambling and scam advertisements.

Meta's response was reportedly "slugging and unsatisfactory".

Bursa Malaysia is supporting the MCMC to act against the social media giant, citing how 60 fake profiles impersonating its CEO have popped up this year, which takes time to be taken down.

Other news that matter

  • Domestic users who consume more than 1,500 kWh per month (about RM708 per month) will be subject to a surcharge of 10 sen/kWh starting next month.

    The 83,000 households affected will experience a minimum monthly increase of RM187 to their electricity bills.

    Sarawak will not be increasing its tariffs.

  • Suhakam will refer, among others, the complaint of alleged racial discrimination and power abuse against its chairperson Rahmat Mohamad, to the Prime Minister's Department's Legal Affairs Division for an independent investigation.

  • Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim proposed for the six state elections to be held in August.
