Bersatu aims to trigger 6 by-elections

Bersatu has set in motion a move that could lead to as many as six by-elections.

The party has instructed all elected representatives to affirm their loyalty to Bersatu, including five MPs and one assemblyperson who had declared support for the Madani coalition.

The move aims to trap the six under Bersatu’s new party rule which would invalidate the membership of any elected representatives who betray the party.

This would then, in theory, trigger the anti-hopping law and force the seats to be vacated.

The six were given 14 days from May 17 to respond.

One rebel MP, Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang) said he would not respond.

Meanwhile, Labuan MP Suhaili Abdul Rahman claimed he didn’t need to respond since the party had allegedly sacked him in December for bringing a party matter to court.

Police station attacked, 2 killed

Two police officers were killed and another was injured in an attack on the Ulu Tiram police station in the early hours of Friday.

The suspect was shot dead.

Initially, authorities said the suspect had links to the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) terror group.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had also called on authorities to find the "mastermind" behind the attack, based on preliminary information.

However, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain has since clarified that the suspect was not a JI member, although his father was.

Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail also clarified that the suspect had acted alone and that the JI movement was under control.

8.7 sexual crimes reported every day

In 2022, the number of sexual crimes reported averaged around 8.7 per day.

Of that number, 4.1 were rapes or incest committed against children.

This is according to data released by the Statistics Department.

There were 3,102 reported cases of sexual crimes in Malaysia in 2020, rising steadily to 3,179 cases in 2021 and 3,303 cases in 2022.
