DAP vows firm stand against hudud in Selangor
After Kelantan, the hudud controversy has now reached the shores of Selangor but Gobind Singh Deo, like his late father Karpal Singh, vowed that it would not materialise.
But this time around, it is not PAS but rather Umno that has opened the Pandora’s box with regard to the Islamic law, an issue with the potential of ripping apart political affiliations.
After Kelantan, the hudud controversy has now reached the shores of Selangor but Gobind Singh Deo, like his late father Karpal Singh, vowed that it would not materialise.
But this time around, it is not PAS but rather Umno that has opened the Pandora's box with regard to the Islamic law, an issue with the potential of ripping apart political affiliations.
In a statement today, Gobind said that Selangor DAP would oppose any move to introduce hudud in the state.
"We in DAP have said and repeated many times that we are of the view that any law which seeks to enforce hudud would be unconstitutional.
"The position applies with equal if not more force to state enactments as criminal laws can only be passed by Parliament and not by any state assembly," he added.
Gobind ( left ), who is Selangor DAP deputy chief and Puchong MP, reiterated that DAP would firmly oppose such moves.
His father, who was the DAP chairperson and Bukit Gelugor MP, was also known for his uncompromising stand on hudud, which often put him at loggerheads with PAS.
Gobind was responding to a report in The Malay Mail Online that Umno had submitted a motion to Selangor state assembly speaker Hannah Yeoh asking for the state to look into the possibility of enforcing hudud in Selangor.
Yeoh ( right ) confirmed that it was among four proposals she received from BN for debate but told the news portal that she has not a made decision as to whether it would be allowed.
Umno's Sungai Air Tawar assemblyperson Kamarol Zaki Abdul Malik, who mooted the study, told The Malay Mail Online that his proposal was submitted last week.
In Kelantan, when PAS mulled tabling a private member's bill in Parliament to implement hudud law in the state, the issue opened a can of worms and strained ties in the opposition bloc.
It also provided BN components MCA and Gerakan with fodder to attack DAP, which champions a secular agenda, over its perceived inability to prevent its Islamic ally from pursuing its theocratic goals.
But the latest development in Selangor saw DAP turning the tables on MCA and Gerakan, asking the presidents of both parties to reject their upcoming cabinet appointments over the issue.
