Malaysia Airlines twin air disasters? Anwar Ibrahim’s Sodomy II trial? The Kajang and Teluk Intan by-elections?
They all feature prominently in Malaysiakini’s English website. The only exception in the Top 15 list is news on a band of Muslims who came out to defend the Our Lady of Lourdes church in Klang in face of threats of protest by rightwing groups.
While the MH370 and MH17 tragedies also gripped Malaysiakini Bahasa Malaysia readers, the top news of 2014 is however Dr Mahathir Mohamad taking a swipe at Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, saying that he did not need a big private jet. There are a few other surprises too.
Meanwhile, Malaysiakini Chinese website readers are interested in a greater variety of news. Aside from those that appeared in the English and BM websites, other news which made it to the top include the Thomas Cup final where Malaysia was beaten by Japan, and McDonald’s asking its delivery personnel not to don uniforms for fear of being attacked by groups targeting companies that allegedly contributed funds to Israel in protest against the country’s military offensives in Gaza.
