The police have taken statements from two Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) students in relation to the incident that took place at the university two days ago, where a glass door at the university administration building was smashed.

The office of deputy vice-chancellor for student affairs Prof Dr Mohd Fauzi Ramlan is in the building.

NONE Both the students, who are also leaders of the pro-Mahasiswa (Pro-M) camp, had their statements recorded during a two-hour session beginning at 5pm yesterday evening at the Serdang police station.

A spokesperson for the Pro-M said the police are investigating the incident under Section 147 and Section 427 of the Penal Code for rioting.

However, he said that he does not know who are the other three students who were to be called to give statements to the police regarding the incident.

During the incident, a group of 100 Pro-M students staged a protest for almost 19 hours, demanding to know why the victory of 11 Pro-M candidates in the campus elections was nullified.            

upm scuffle 230211 Yesterday, the police stated that they had identified the five UPM students involved in allegedly creating chaos at the administration building.

Serdang police chief Abdul Razak Elias said the university’s administration and two security guards injured in the incident had lodged police reports on the matter and that the five would be called in for questioning soon.

Six students and security guards were injured during the scuffle .

Meanwhile, Gerakan Youth has urged UPM to quickly resolve the problem arising out of its campus election, lest it escalate into a serious matter.

Gerakan Youth deputy chief Oh Tong Keong said prolonging the issue would not be good for the students as well as for the university.

Oh said UPM should accept the election result and respect the decision of students to vote their choices.

NONE In a related development, Pro-M UPM also made a police report at Seri Serdang police station, claiming that a group of mysterious people who appeared at the scene had caused the fracas.

According to a statement released later, the group of people wore neither university uniforms nor name tags and hence it was believed that they are outsidesr.

“The students were stopped by these mysterious people when they wanted to enter the building to ask for an explanation (from the campus authority).

“So, we want the police to investigate the identity of the mysterious of people.”
