Lim said it would be a "shame" if Ghani, a "classic Malay gentleman who is a moderate and rational person" was sacrificed for "Umno power politics".
"Ghani was fielded (in Gelang Patah) by people in Umno who want to see an end to him...
"Ghani has contributed to both Johor and Malaysia's development (and) it is only just and fair that he is appointed to a new post in the new government," Lim ( right ) told reporters.
The former Johor menteri besar lost to Lim by more than 14,000 votes in the seat traditionally contested by Umno's partner MCA.
Fomer higher education minister Khaled Nordin will take over as Johor menteri besar.
ROS probe continues
Separately, newly-elected Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming has given his statement to the Registrar of Societies on alleged irregularities in DAP's central executive committee (CEC) election last year.
Ong, who acted as the DAP's internal auditor, and election returning officer Pooi Weng Keong both had their their statement recorded from 10am to 1pm.

) gave his statement on how he discovered the mistake in terms of tabulation and I gave my statement that the new tabulation only affected Vincent Woo and Zairil Khir Johari.
"There was no element of manipulation or foul play, but honest human error," Ong said.
He added that he had also provided the ROS a list of the 1,843 delegates who were eligible to vote and those who did vote in the DAP CEC last year.
"I hope this (case) will draw to a close in the near future and will not be used as a threat to the DAP," he said, noting that the ROS had reserved the right to call more witnesses.
Just three days before the April 20 nomination day, the ROS had issued a letter stating that it does not recognise the CEC line-up, causing fears that the DAP candidates would not be able to contest under the party logo.
However, the Election Commission (EC) stepped in and said its returning officers would accept authorisation letters from the DAP leadership for individuals to contest on the party ticket.
