PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim should not expect the Australian government to cater to his needs by making a statement to support him, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

“(Anwar) cannot state his personal or political views and expect them to be catered to.

“My view is that we should adapt to a country’s local situation and not expect them to adapt to us,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

NONEAnwar (left) told Australian media that he was “disgusted” that the Australia government did not take a stronger stance against the alleged threat made to Malaysian students there to stop them from attending Anwar’s talk.

Last week, students received an email from a Malaysian student adviser warning Public Services Department students from attending Anwar’s talk in Adelaide on the weekend, or risk their scholarships.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, however, did issue a one-line statement saying that all students residing in Australia enjoy all liberties under the Australian law.

Ironically, Ahmad Zahid said, Anwar should respect Australian laws.

“We should respect foreign laws and surely countries have regulations that that restrict discussion on political affairs overseas.

“I feel that any move by the Australian government should be respected by all parties,” he said.
