PAS will lead a "mammoth demonstration" to protest against the implementation of the goods and services tax, government leakages and the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement.

The resolution was unanimously passed after a debate at the 59th PAS Muktamar at Stadium Malawati, Shah Alam, today.

mat sabu pas youth agm 211113 01 In proposing the motion on behalf of the PAS central committee, incumbent deputy president Mohamad Sabu said that the GST is "un-Islamic and cruel".

He added this is especially when the latest Auditor-General's report listed hundreds of millions in wastage and government leakages.

"Why didn't the government choose to deal with corruption first?" he asked.

The demonstration, he said, would be a "people's movement" against oppression, and involve NGOs and other Pakatan Rakyat parties.

        

This was supported by Johor delegate Zulkifli Ahmad who said that the GST is cruel to the poor, and "Allah demands that we fight cruelty."

Negri Sembilan delegate Khairul Azidi Ishak echoed him, saying that it is "forbidden" for the government to take the people's earnings against their will.

"Terms like leakages and wastage are just nicer terms to say robbery," he said.

The GST would be implemented at 6 percent on Apr 1, 2015, while the TPPA is still in the negotiation stages.

Although PAS quoted scripture, their stand was in sharp contrast with the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) which published Friday sermons calling for support for the GST.

Jakim argued that the funds collected through the GST could strengthen the government and the economic standing of Muslims.
