DAP’s Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching has urged that more “drastic” action be taken against those who caused the discrepancies highlighted in the Auditor-General’s Report every year.

Speaking at the Parliament lobby, Teo said that it is unacceptable that only one person has been charged in a Sessions Court despite oversights leading to losses of hundreds of millions of ringgit in taxpayers funds.

She added that in the absence of criminal charges, those found to be responsible for the oversight should face sterner disciplinary action.

“They need to be sacked. In the private sector, if you dare to misuse funds, you will be charged with criminal breach of trust and the losses recovered from the employee,” she said.

Citing a written reply from Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Shahidan Kassim, she said that even if all the officers probed are sacked, it still will not be enough.

Shahidan said that as at Nov 21 last year, 19 officers were facing pending disciplinary investigations, while two had been found guilty and will be facing action.

“We don’t even know what this action is. Is it only a warning letter?” she asked.

Shahidan also said that six officers are being probed by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), and 12 had been found not liable, including nine retired officers.

The officer charged in the Kota Baru court was charged with forging documents.

“As a taxpayer are you happy? As an MP and a taxpayer, I am definitely not...

“People are getting used to it and this has become a yearly carnival where every year we go through the same frustration, yet so little action is taken,” she said.

Yesterday, Public Accounts Committee chairperson Nur Jazlan Mohamed said that one person has been sacked following the Auditor-General’s Report 2012, but he could not reveal for which case.

The first installment of the Auditor-General’s Report 2013 was tabled in Parliament yesterday.
