PAS vice-president Salahuddin Ayub is prepared to meet with Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi over the minister’s statement that action will be taken against Unit Amal.

Salahuddin ( right ) said the unit does not need to be registered with the Registrar of Societies (ROS) as it falls under Article 54(9)(d) of the PAS constitution, which allows the PAS Youth wing to form any committee or bureau as needed.

The unit is under the control of the PAS Youth wing.

“I am ready to meet Zahid to resolve this issue with Unit Amal, once and for all.

“We would like to see him (Zahid) act professionally and be open to discussion,” he said during a press conference at the PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

Salahuddin added that he would review the developments in this issue before issuing in detail his proposed meeting with Zahid.

Unit Amal, which is under the control of PAS Youth, has been in existence for 23 years.

“Unit Amal does not need to be registered under the ROS. Year after year, PAS Youth submits a full report on the unit’s activities, which are then presented to the PAS muktamar,” Salahuddin said in reference to Article 54(9)(d) of the party constitution.

The unit's activities are included in PAS Youth's annual report, which is then submitted to the ROS.

'Zahid facing an uncertain future'

In a separate press conference, PAS information chief Mahfuz Omar told the media that Zahid was lashing out at Unit Amal because he was facing an uncertain political future.

“He wants Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to be more confident with him and he doesn’t want to get kicked out in the next cabinet reshuffle,” Mahfuz said today.

With his racist stance and statements of late, Zahid is currently unpopular among Barisan National members, Mahfuz ( left ) pointed out.

“Because of that, he seeks popularity in Umno and wants to show that he can fight gangsters,” Mahfuz said.

Yesterday, a day after police arrested 156 members of the Penang Voluntary Patrol Unit (PPS), Zahid announced that similar action would be taken on Unit Amal.

“The same action will be taken by the police. I am sure they are going to take action,” the home minister said.
