After being probed for sedition over a blog posting, former Information Minister Zainuddin Maidin concluded that police are not Umno lackeys as alleged by some.

In his blog today Zainuddin, better known as Zam, revealed that he was probed by cops three months ago over a December posting which alleged the judiciary was stalling sentencing opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim for sodomy, pending a golf meeting between Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and US President Barack Obama.

This, he said, was why he announced his retirement from political writing earlier this year.

"I kept this (sedition probe) secret for three months, not just from the public but from my wife, children, family and all those close to me.

"I decided not to protest or reveal all to the media [...] because I did not want it to be a political issue [...] even though I smelled a hint of selective prosecution in the probe order.

"I am confident from my experience that despite negative perceptions of the police, I believe they work very hard to stay professional.

"They are not Umno ‘barua’ (lackeys) as accused by an arrogant someone who has forgotten his roots," he wrote.

This is a possible reference to Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali ( right ), who asked IGP Khalid Abu Bakar to state whether he is an Umno barua .

The statement has incurred the ire of the police who want Azmin to apologise.

Zainuddin however said his experience has shown him that police are unlikely to be influenced by any party when investigating and charging offenders.

This, he said, persuaded him to resume writing about politics after he convinced himself that the police were not out to get him.
