Kuala Lumpur Hawkers and Petty Traders Association chairman Ang Say Tee today urged the authorities to charge Malay NGO Coalition chairperson Jamal Md Yunos in court, following his arrest yesterday night.
He hopes the police take strict action against Jamal (photo) so it can act as a deterrent to others from disturbing the public order.
"Our country has laws. It is illegal intimidate or provoke. The authorities should charge Jamal so Petaling Street businesses can run their business peacefully, as usual…
"We feel anxious over Jamal’s action and he has caused harm to the entire operation of Petaling Street hawker. He should take some social responsibility,” Ang told a press conference at Jalan Sultan this afternoon.
Ang also expressed hope that the Petaling Street issue can come to an end and businesses can safely open as usual.
He also thanked the Kuala Lumpur police chief for maintaining order and security at Petaling Street and Chinese ambassador to Malaysia Huang Huikang for visiting Petaling Street yesterday .
Most stalls open as usual
It was business as usual for about 90 percent of stalls and shops at Petaling Street this morning, with local and foreign tourists visiting the traditional trading area of the ethnic Chinese.
Police personnel were stationed along the street to maintain order.
Police say a total of 200 police personnel are on duty at Petaling Street today.
Dang Wangi Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief M Gunalan told Malaysiakini these police personnel will be stationed here until night.
"Everything is so far, so good," said Gunalan when met.
