Muhyiddin: Hidden hands shielding 1MDB culprits

Former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin suspects there may be hidden hands trying to cover up for those implicated in the1MDB scandal.

He said this is because investigations into the debt-ridden sovereign wealth fund appear to have been interrupted.

"It is as though there are hidden hands that want to cover up the wrongdoings of certain parties. This is unacceptable," he said in a statement today.

Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz has previously said the central bank's probe into 1MDB has already been concluded and sent to the Attorney-General's Chambers in August.

As such, Muhyiddin said Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali (photo) should not dilly-dally in taking action against those responsible as any delay will only erode the people's confidence in the government.

"It would be wise for the AG to come forward soon to inform the public about developments regarding this case," he said.

He also urged that the police and MACC be allowed to continue their probe into 1MDB without any further disturbances so that they can submit their investigation papers to the A-G Chambers for further action.

Likewise, he added, the empty spots in the Public Accounts Committee should be filled up as soon as possible so that they, too, can continue their probe, especially with regards to the Auditor-General's report on 1MDB.

Previously, there was joint special task force for 1MDB comprising the police, MACC and Bank Negara headed by former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail.

However, the taskforce was disbanded after Gani was unceremoniously removed and replaced by Apandi.

Besides that, MACC officers probing 1MDB were also detained by police and their documents seized, allegedly because of information leaks.
