Mukhriz shocked, denies 'Team 5M' exists

It comes as no surprise that his name was implicated in the alleged Muhyiddin Yassin-led team to contest for key posts in the next Umno polls, slated for 2018.

But Mukhriz Mahathir, whose father is on the warpath against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, denied being a member of such a pact.

"I read (about Team 5M) and was shocked. It (the team) does not exist. I don't know from where the report came from.

"But I can say I am not a part of it (Team 5M)," the Kedah menteri besar was quoted as saying by Bernama .

Recently, PRU14.tv , a pro-Umno blog, reported on the existence of 'Team 5M'.

Apart from Muhyiddin and Mukhriz, others on the team were named as Umno vice-president Mohd Shafie Apdal, Johor Menteri Besar Mohamed Khaled Nordin and former Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad (Md) Said.

Quoting a source, the report said current deputy president Muhyiddin would contest for the president post with Mukhriz vying for number two.

The rest were slated to contest the three vice-president posts.

Previously, Muhyiddin and Shafie's aides dismissed the report while Khaled blamed it on those attempting to sow discord in Umno.

Mukhriz also did not rule out the possibility of this being the agenda of those seeking to divide the party.

In a related development, Khaled said the Johor Umno liaison committee would continue to build the party, and not destroy it.

"Air views in a stern but polite manner. Express yourselves with civility. The party must be made stronger and confidence must be returned.

"There is no need for a split or to create frictions that can be destructive," he added in a statement.

Khaled, who heads Johor Umno, urged delegates attending the party general assembly to prioritise discipline and cautioned them against acting based on emotion.
